I’m definitely getting more sentimental in my ol

I’m definitely getting more sentimental in my old age. I bought this brooch because of the beautiful aquamarines which hadn’t been spotted as such. My thinking was to set the lovely stones into rings - in my view there’s nothing quite like an emerald cut aqua with diamonds thrown into the mix. But now I’m looking at the beautiful work that’s gone into it and wondering if I should? Brooches can be stunning, but they don’t get the airtime they used to now that we no longer wear such structured clothes. Tell me what you think...does it have a life ahead of it in this form? Did you know that gold can tarnish? We think of its country cousin silver as the one that loses its lustre but you’d be surprised. Get a soft cloth with a tiny bit of silver polish on it and give your gold a rub…I can’t promise a genie but I think you’ll still be pleased. It can be transformative as in the case of this beautiful Edwardian Lavalière Aquamarine and Pearl Necklace in 15ct gold. Swipe to see the difference.

Forgive me if you know this already…but the reason it tarnishes is that all gold apart from pure gold (24ct) is an alloy…mixed with other metals. 18ct is 75% gold, 9ct 37.5% and then it is mixed with other metals, which help to determine the colour. For example, rose gold is combined with copper to give it pinky hues and white gold will be a mix of white metals, such as silver. Another interesting gold fact is that white gold can never really be white like platinum or silver, it’s gold after all!, so when you buy a new piece of white gold jewellery, it is coated in a plating of rhodium. Over the years, the rhodium will wear off and your white gold ring will look a little bit yellow again. If you want to return it to its shiny self, your jeweller can re-plate for not a huge sum, as little as £25-£30 in some cases. Worth asking if you miss the bright clean look.

My life recently has felt a bit like this marbled paper looks…fun and full but occasionally somewhat frantic! I’ve been neglecting you guys as a result. So 👋 how’s things? It’s February the birthstone of which is amethyst and it’s also Valentine’s Day (in case you hadn’t noticed). This little pendant meets my themes with its stunningly coloured amethyst, and the shape of it with its bright old-cut diamonds almost says heart, don’t you think? It also has a sweet story as it was sat undiscovered at the bottom of a pile of rubbishy tat, a lone dirty earring, when those sparklers winked at me. So I rescued him and I love how his transformation has gone. I’ll get him online soon but pre-listing price is a £225 (more info below). Big love to you x
